Gioachino Rossini Biography

http://nationalpostnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/gioachino-rossini.jpgBiography

Gioachino Rossini's parents were both working musicians. His father played the horn and taught at the prestigious Accademia Filharmonica in Bologna, and his mother, although not formally trained, was a soprano. Rossini was taught and encouraged at home until he eventually enrolled at the Liceo Musicale in Bologna. After graduation from that institution, the young musician was commissioned by the Venetian Teatro San Moise to compose La cambiale di matrimonio, a comedy in one act. In 1812, Rossini wrote La pietra del paragone, for La Scala theater in Milan and was already, at the tender age of 20, Italy's most prominent composer.

In 1815, Rossini accepted a contract to work for the theaters in Naples, where he would remain until 1822, composing prolifically in comfort. He composed 19 operas during this tenure, focusing his attention on opera seria and creating one of his most famous serious works, Otello, for the Teatro San Carlos. While he served in this capacity, Rossini met and courted Isabella Colbran, a local soprano whom he would eventually marry. Other cities, too, clamored for Rossini's works, and it was for Roman audiences that he composed the sparkling comedies Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville, 1816) and La cenerentola (Cinderella, 1817).

In 1822, Rossini left Naples and embarked on a European tour. The Italian musician was received enthusiastically to say the least, and enjoyed fame and acclaim everywhere. Even Beethoven, at the opposite stylistic pole in the musical scene of the day, praised him. The following year, Rossini was commissioned to write Semiramide, a serious opera, for La Fenice, a theater in Venice. This work was less successful in its own day than some of his previous efforts, but spawned several arias that remain part of any vocalist's songbook. In 1824, Rossini traveled, via London, to Paris where he would live for five years and serve as the music director at the Théâtre Italien from 1824 to 1826. The composer gained commissions from other opera houses in France, including the Paris Opéra. Rossini composed his final opera, Guillaume Tell (1829), before retiring from composition in that genre at the age of 37. Its overture is not only a concert favorite but an unmistakable reflection and continuation of Beethoven's heroic ideal. The catalog of work Rossini had written at the time of his retirement included 32 operas, two symphonies, numerous cantatas, and a handful of oratorios and chamber music pieces. After moving back to Italy, Rossini became a widower in 1845. His marriage to Isabella Colbran had not been particularly happy, and shortly after her death, the composer married Olympe Pelissier, a woman who had been his mistress.

In 1855, Rossini, along with his new bride, moved once again, this time settling in Passy, a suburb of Paris. He spent the remaining years of his life writing sacred music as well as delectable miniatures for both piano and voice (some of which he called "sins of my old age"). He was revered from the time he was a teenager until his death. Rossini was buried in Paris' Père Lachaise cemetery in proximity to the graves of Vincenzo Bellini, Luigi Cherubini, and Frédéric Chopin. In 1887, Rossini's grave was transferred from Paris to Santa Croce, in Florence, in a ceremony attended by more than 6,000 admirers.

Rossini's chief legacy remains his extraordinary contribution to the operatic repertoire. His comedic masterpieces, including L'Italiana in Algeri, La gazza ladra, and perhaps his most famous work, Il barbiere di Siviglia, are regarded as cornerstones of the genre along with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giuseppe Verdi.

Dear Jennifer Lopez: my girl crush is over

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/JLo-malfunction.jpg
I used to have a girl crush on Jennifer Lopez. Though I’ve never been a big fan of her music, I’ve loved her as an actress. Ever since the movie Selena, I’ve put all of my Latina hopes and dreams in a sparkly JLo basket. Well, actually, she shares the basket with Salma Hayek, but still. Jennifer Lopez did Mi Familia, a story about a Mexican-American family (although Jennifer herself is Puerto Rican). She was also a Fly Girl on In Living Color. The icing on the cake, Jennifer was Janet Jackson’s backup dancer in one of my favorite Janet songs, That’s the Way Love Goes.
 http://candy95.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/0620-jennifer-lopez-nip-slip-01-480x3181.jpg
Still. Back to my story.

Jennifer Lopez has achieved a high level of success in the entertainment world. And she is Latina. It’s a beautiful thing. I was happy to hear she settled down with Marc Anthony. Their movie El Cantante gave us a chance to see them work together. Then they had the twins, Max and Emme. It was good to see the resurgence of her career when she signed on to do American Idol.  I even got a little teary-eyed when JLo and Marc Anthony performed Aguanile on the American Idol finale last year.
 http://yeeeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/jennifer-lopez-wardrobe-malfunction-wetten-dass.jpg
But these days, Jennifer is really leaving a sour taste in my mouth. First, it was the bombshell of her and Marc Anthony divorcing.  Then it was Bikini-Clad Jennifer Lopez Lounges with Shirtless Casper Smart in Hawaii.
 http://www.gistexpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/germ.jpg
Who does that? Who hooks up with one of their backup dancers who is half their age?
Well, obviously not you and I because we don’t have backup dancers, but you get the gist. Frolicking on the beaches of Hawaii in a bikini with your new hot, young stud…and your twins. Ew–I just can’t. Jennifer even brought Casper along to rub shoulders with her A-list celebrity homies. Now, there is a buzz about JLo’s wardrobe malfunction at the Academy Awards.
jLO 300x200 Dear Jennifer Lopez: my girl crush is over

What was that? A nip slip? On the biggest night of award shows?

Yawn. My girl crush is over. Sad. For the record, I like the second dress she wore better. I guess Salma Hayek has all the room in the world to stretch out her tiny legs in my sparkly Latina basket now.

'Sugar, Sugar' Singer FLOORED by Davy's Death -- He Was in 'Perfect Health'

The lead singer of the 60s band The Archies -- famous for singles like "Sugar, Sugar" -- is completely shocked by Davy Jones' death ... telling TMZ, Davy was in "perfect health" just months before his death.

66-year-old Ron Dante -- whose group released several hits around the same time as The Monkees -- tells us, he was great friends with Davy ... and even spoke to him a few months ago, when Davy appeared to be doing just fine.
http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2012/news/120312/davy-jones-300.jpg
Dante tells us, he and Davy had been in discussions to do a show together not too long ago ... and possibly even cut a few records -- but those plans never materialized.

Dante adds, Davy "will be missed by millions."

“Artist” Star Jean DuJardin Learns English, Contemplates a Hollywood Career

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6whHlq0mvJtFvreglYsfyJGXPOy_qHzJm9nIG-P7RUcEi_qS3sIf-t2yEabIbc7Pxv8Jra4RaAtuDGFKfMsW-lyOPtnN3h0pWZf1mP6DRbHJGridv6H-95oMs3kZ7CUBGQafC2lzs91uE/s1600/jean+dujardin+1.jpg
Jean DuJardin–you’ve never heard of him, but he will be nominated for an Oscar in “The Artist,” which played the New York Film Festival Friday night. “The Artist” was a hit in Cannes, and wins over anyone who sees it for its freshness, cleverness, and exuberance. It’s a black and white, silent film with three American actors–John Goodman, James Cromwell, and Penelope Ann Miller. But its real stars are French–Jean DuJardin, a French leading man who is 39; and beautiful Berenice Bejo, who is also the wife of director Michel Hazanavicus. Start learning these names, because they are going to figure in our lives pretty quickly. “The Artist” is a tour de force. It will be the must-see film of the season simply because no one’s ever seen anything like it before.
 http://trialx.com/curetalk/wp-content/blogs.dir/7/files/2011/04/gcelebrities/Jean_Dujardin-2.jpg
Only Goodman was absent last night at the film festival screening. And in the audience there was everyone from Jessica Lange to Barry Levinson, Eddie Redmayne, Benjamin Walker, Joel Grey, producer Michael Shamberg, and Julian Schnabel. Famed actor Charles Keating came to support Cromwell; they’ve been friends since the age of 20 when they worked at the Cleveland Playhouse. Many of the stars repaired to a private dinner at the swanky Fifth Avenue home of Susan and John Gutfreund, who served very American (and delicious) macaroni and cheese, and red velvet cake.
 http://www.pleasantmorningbuzz.com/pics/jean_dujardin_quiet_oscars.jpg
DuJardin is about to hit big, so he’s studying his English. He knows less English than Roberto Benigni did in 1998, but he’s learning fast. His wife, the famed French actress Alexandra Lamy, was with him too — it was her birthday. These two French couples looked they’ve stepped out of Vogue. They are certain to win over American film audiences quickly.
 http://img2-2.timeinc.net/ew/i/2012/01/10/Jean-Dujardin_240.jpg
And even though Lamy was within earshot, I did ask Jean which actresses he’d like to work with in America. His answer? He looked around, and the said in a low French growl, “It’s a supermarket, no?” His English is getting better.
 http://img.poptower.com/pic-74405/jean-dujardin.jpg?d=600
“The Artist” opens on November 23rd, and I predict it will cause a sensation. Set in 1927 Hollywood, the film unfolds at the end of the silent movie era. DuJardin’s George Valentin is the biggest star of the era, but he’s afraid talkies will kill his career. Enter Peppy Miller (Bejo, a potential Best Supporting Actress nominee), the first star of the new era. They are star-crossed stars who travel am ebullient but sometimes tricky journey. The movie was shot in Art Deco locales in Los Angeles. And it features cameos by a lot of well known character actors including Missi Pyle, Joel Murray, Beth Grant, and Malcolm McDowell. There’s also a stunning score that is sure to win many awards–it’s almost like a character in the movie.

Meryl Streep Biography & Career

http://www.realbollywood.com/up_images/meryl-streep9759.jpg
"In the nearly four years of this series, no name has been mentioned more often, or with more respect, than that of tonight's guest.... She is one of those rare actors who defines her generation, her time, and her craft."
 http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2007/specials/beauties07/everyage/meryl_streep.jpg
James Lipton, Inside the Actor's Studio 1998
"Meryl Streep could play Batman and be the right choice. She's perfection."
— Cameron on Modern Family
 http://www.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/celebrities/26983-meryl-streep/1260376719_meryl-streep-290.jpg
Mary Louise "Meryl" Streep (born 1949), widely considered by critics and fans alike to be the best actress working today, broke Oscar nomination records with her nomination for Best Supporting Actress (Adaptation). Now with seventeen Oscar nominations and three wins to her credit, she has tackled virtually every genre in Hollywood, including romantic comedies (Defending Your Life), serious dramas (Sophie's Choice, Doubt), action-adventure (The River Wild), comedies (She-Devil), classic romances (Out of Africa), and and even a musical (Mamma Mia!). Easily identified by her trademark nose, she has also appeared in, among others, The Devil Wears Prada, Silkwood, Angels In America (as an elderly male rabbi, among others), and Julie and Julia.
 http://www.topnews.in/files/Meryl-Streep15.jpg
She has been described as "the successor to Bette Davis," and in fact Davis herself endorsed Meryl's early work. Her versatility and ability to act with her eyes and face are now unique in Hollywood, but the talent evident in every film is reminiscent of Davis at her best. Onscreen she plays characters with tremendous depth, but oddly Meryl has no 'trademark' - she transforms herself completely for each role she plays in a way no Hollywood actress has done before or since. Although critics have described her as 'robotic' and 'acting from the neck up,' recent movies like Mamma Mia!! provide evidence to the contrary.
 http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meryl-streep1.jpg
She is the standard to which all other actresses and most actors as well are compared, and the phrase "You're no Meryl Streep" has been used on multiple occasions at all levels of the acting industry. In essence, she has defined the standards for not only her generation but every generation to come.

Laura Maggi Sexpresso: Wives ban their husbands from visiting Italian cafe where busty barmaid serves up drinks in skimpy outfits

http://www.ncsx.com/2012/022712/Hungeree/laura_maggi_02.jpg
After eight years running a bar, Laura Maggi suddenly found men beating a path to her door.

Not for the quality of her coffee  and aperitifs, but because she had started appearing for work in highly revealing outfits.
http://www.ncsx.com/2012/022712/Hungeree/laura_maggi_06.jpg
Hundreds of male customers flocked there day and night, leaving their cars double parked in the surrounding streets.

Congestion became such a problem that the lady mayor announced she was considering an emergency bylaw to limit traffic in the area.
Causing controversy: Laura Maggi, 34, who runs a bar called Le Cafe, has dominated newspapers and TV chat shows, after pictures of her dressed in barely anything appeared on the internet

Now women in the small northern Italian town of Bagnolo Mella have declared Le Cafe out of bounds to their menfolk – and 34-year-old Miss Maggi has become a national celebrity.

Yesterday she was a guest on the Italian equivalent of This Morning and said: ‘I don’t see what the problem is – it’s just a bit of harmless fun.

'It’s not my fault if guys want to come and have a drink in my bar.’

She added that some customers were travelling up to 70 miles just to have a coffee in her bar.

She has 5,000 new friends on Facebook while a local poll found that 46 per cent of respondents said partners of her male customers should be ‘asking themselves why their partners prefer Laura to them’.

Several wives from the town have been on TV to complain. One said: ‘It is outrageous and should not be allowed.

Bagnolo’s mayor Cristina Almici said: ‘We have received several complaints from women about the bar and we are looking at what we can do with regard to public order.

‘There has been a huge influx of traffic into the town since the news of Laura started to spread and this has led to incidents of bad parking and some minor acts of vandalism.

‘We can’t stop people from going to her bar and I know it is very popular with men in the town – personally I don’t see any problem with how she looks or dresses.
